Physiological Effects of Effleurage/Gliding:
1. Mechanically moves fluids (venous, lymphatic, and interstitial).
2. Improves local circulation (both mechanically and reflexively), removes metabolic waste products (lactic acid and carbon dioxide) and brings nutrients (oxygen and glucose) to the area. Improved circulation leads to decreased blood pressure and heart rate, as well as increased cardiac output.
3. Creates a soothing sense of well-being and relaxes muscles through activation of the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system.
4. Produces superficial heat.
5. Compresses, stretches and broadens superficial tissues and muscles with use of deeper Effleurage/Gliding strokes.
6. Decreases or relieves pain via the gate control theory and/or increased production of endorphins.
Physiological Effects of Petrissage/Kneading:
1. Relieves edema/swelling by mechanically squeezing fluids out of the area proximal to the site of edema.
2. Stretches, broadens and loosens tissues.
3. Helps prevent muscle stiffness and soreness by mechanically squeezing metabolic waste out of the tissue and into circulatory and/or lymphatic capillaries, which reduces local tissue acidity.
4. Invigorates and revitalizes the skin by mechanical stimulation of the sudoriferous and sebaceous glands.
5. Reduces superficial adhesions and other restrictions in the fascia.
6. Can prevent or decrease muscle atrophy and enhance muscle tone by maintaining circulation and sensory nerve stimulation in the area. Petrissage/Kneading also mimics the contract/relax of a muscle to maintain the normal electrochemical exchanges that should occur during active exercise.
7. Releases tension in the abdominal musculature, thereby improving normal digestion, peristalsis and elimination.
Physiological Effects of Friction:
1. Breaks up connective tissue adhesions and reorganizes collagen during healing.
2. Separates adhered fascial planes to access underlying structures (myofascial release).
3. Spreads and stretches the muscle and tendon fibers.
4. Reduces muscle tension by stimulating the golgi tendon apparatus at the musculotendinous junction to inhibit contractions.
5. Generates superficial heat.
6. Improves local circulation by creating a local ischemia, followed by hyperemia, stimulating histamine release and other chemical changes.
7. Releases tension in the abdominal musculature, thereby improving normal digestion, peristalsis and elimination.
8. Releases trigger, acupuncture and other points.
9. Relieves pain via the Gate Control Theory.
Physiological Effects of Vibration:
1. Relaxes muscles/reduces muscle guarding.
2. Loosens superficial tissues (muscles, connective tissue, ligaments).
3. Soothes and sedates. When applied to peripheral nerve roots/trunks, it stimulates both autonomic and peripheral nerve response.
4. Stimulates synovial fluid activity (traction vibration). This redistributes, rather than increases, the amount of fluid in the joint cavity.
5. Increases peristaltic action and stimulates visceral activity (digestion, peristalsis and elimination) when applied to the abdomen or the parasympathetic nerve trunks at the sacrum.
6. Relieves pain via the Gate Control Theory.
7. Relieves local congestion (sinus).
Physiological Effects of Swedish Gymnastics/ Movement:
l. Increases flexibility via direct stretch or reflexive contract/relax response.
2. Neuromuscular reeducation.
3. Increases movement of fluids (venous and lymph) via pumping action of movement.
4. Reduces muscle guarding.
5. Loosens fascial adhesions by stretching tissues.
Physiological Effects of Tapotement/Tapping:
1. Improves muscle tone via reflexive contract/ relax response.
2. Relieves respiratory and sinus congestion by mechanically loosening mucous.
3. Stimulates nervous system for reflexive invigoration (short application) of reproductive, digestive and urinary systems when applied over the sacrum or stimulates nervous system for reflexive relaxation if applied lightly for a longer period of time. In general, Tapotement/Tapping is considered an invigorating stroke.
4. Increases local circulation by stimulating histamine release.
5. Generally invigorates the body.
